I'm a quilter?

Yep. You read it right. I am making a quilt!

Now, this isn't a tie quilt or blanket, but an actual get large cuts of fabric, cut a million smaller chunks of fabric, tedious sewing, seam-ripping (if you are me and keep messing up/are a perfectionist), lining things up, more seam-ripping, wanting to throw your sewing machine out the window behind you, sweating, crying, even more seam-ripping, and rejoicing. It's such a fountain of emotions, quilting.

Kristi (my sister, in case you weren't sure) and I decided it would be "fun" to make a quilt, so we went to Joanne Fabrics and bought an "Easy Quilts" magazine and picked our design. A 62" x 72" QUILT! So excited. We bought 8 different chunks of fabric ranging from 5/8 yards to 4 yards and began cutting. I counted up exactly how many cuts we made after we were finished; a whopping 550 cuts. Can you believe it?!

After the cutting and massive amounts of sewing pieces of different fabric together, I have this (forgive the quality; it's from my camera phone):

(Yes, see all those different fabrics and cuts? I did that!)

Please note: there are 30, individual squares in this picture and they are placed next to one another on the carpet. I was so excited to get to this point that I just wanted to lay it out and pretend like I was done. I am working on sewing ALL of those together (I'm about half-way done) and I'll soon start sewing the border and getting that attached. Then comes the batting. Then the 4 yards of backing fabric. and then quilting that together (quilting and sewing are COMPLETELY different, in case you didn't know). Kristi quilted hers with her sewing machine (rather then sending it off to be quilted, which can be pretty expensive) and it turned out awesome.

More to come!

*Editor's note: on one of our outings to Joanne's, we took our magazine and questions to the professional quilter-lady who was working and she pointed out how brave we were to tackle such a quilt. We replied by saying, "Oh, this is an easy quilting magazine--it's says so right here." To which she replied, "Yes, easy quilting for experienced quilters." Whoops.

Wow! I'm totally impressed Summer! That quilt is amazing! I wish I actually had some time to make one. I have a few that I've had my eye on! Keep the pictures coming. I can't wait to see it all finished!

Way to go Summer! I love to sew but am way too intimidated by quilts. I am one of those sewing perfectionists and the thought of all those little squares not lining up is enough to deter me.

Wow! I am so impressed. That's beautiful. I am working on my first quilt right now, but it's going to be kinda ugly... really ugly actually. I am just using up tons of old UGLY fabrics scraps that I have so I can eventually start building my supply of cute fabrics I actually like. :)
